General
Is Mac-On-Linux an emulator?
No, it's really a virtual machine with some custom drivers to improve performance, similar to vmware.
What's the performance like?
It runs at almost native speed for CPU/Altivec with similar disk performance. The video driver is a very simple framebuffer with no hardware acceleration and as a result is about 50% slower than native according to X-Bench.
Can I run MOL on OSX?
Not at this time, but most of the MOM patches have been integrated back into the source. An OSX port is likely for the future.
Installation
Can I use my existing Mac OS / Mac OSX install?
Yes! Simply specify your existing partition in the MOL configuration files.
How about a disk image?
Yes! You can use mol-img to create disk images.
Hardware Support
What hardware can be used natively?
USB Devices, Disks, CDROM/DVDs, PCI devices that do not use DMA (through PCI Proxy).
Can Mac-On-Linux use my 3D Accelerator?
No, sorry, there's no support for 3D accelerated graphics in Mac-On-Linux at this time.
Can I run Mac-On-Linux on x86 CPUs?
No, there's no emulation, so PowerPC versions of MacOS will not run on x86. Although there is pearpc ( http://pearpc.sourceforge.net/ ) which is a similar application for other platforms.
What about x86 versions of Mac OSX?
Mac-On-Linux was not written with x86 CPUs in mind, but if you feel like providing patches, it's certainly possible to add support. Since applications like vmware exist, it's not very high my list of things to do.
This Project
Is there an IRC Channel?
Sure! Feel free to discuss Mac-On-Linux issues in #mol on freenode. Please be patient though as there's often not much going on there.
Is there a way to get support besides the IRC Channel?
Please file a bug report in the SourceForge Project's bug tracker.
Why did you fork Mac-On-Linux?
I forked Mac-On-Linux because development had stopped at the official site and Mac-On-Linux was only being maintained by distribution packagers. I've gathered their patches and am trying to restart development on this important piece of software.
This FAQ doesn't answer my question!
Hey, that's not a question! Just email Joseph Jezak, hop on IRC or post to the mailing lists. Or file a bug report, that works too.
